Leading group in waste management sector in Croatia and in the region
C.I.O.S. group was established in 1991. Today, it operates at 60 locations and has 1,200 employees, of which 900 in Croatia. The Group is the market leader in the collection and treatment of various waste materials both in Croatia and in the region.
C.I.O.S. group is the largest privately-owned waste management group, with the share capital of HRK 207.000,00 and 100% Croatian ownership.
C.I.O.S. group has invested more than HRK 1.42 billion in its fixed assets, including investments in the construction of a single network of recycling centers, development and hiring of high-quality human resources, the most advanced equipment for waste treatment and waste management, with the aim of increasing the efficacy of waste recovery and producing larger quantity of secondary raw materials.
C.I.O.S. group collects and treats 1,024 mn tons of waste on annual basis, out of which 81% or 830,000 tons in Croatia. The Group’s mission is to be and remain the leader in the Croatian and the regional waste management market, a recognizable brand in waste management sector.
C.I.O.S. group is an unavoidable factor in meeting the Croatian national target rate of collecting EE equipment (reaching the 45% rate of average weight of EE equipment marketed in the preceding 3 years) and meeting the Croatian national targets for recovery and recycling of EE equipment applied by categories of EE equipment.
C.I.O.S. group in Croatia:
- Collects and treats 15% of total generated waste through recovery and disposal Participates with 25% share in total treated waste (excluding construction waste)
- C.I.O.S. group is the most significant stakeholder in ensuring the fulfilment of the national targets regarding end-of-life vehicles reuse and recovery (minimum 95% reuse and recovery and minimum 85% reuse and recycling).
Conversion of waste into resources is one of the key guidelines of the EU policies for circular economy, implemented and supported by the C.I.O.S. group in its activities. It means returning usable raw materials – products, substances and materials in the economy and their reuse in an efficient and feasible manner, reducing the amount and hazards of production and consumer residues.
Aware of the fact that waste disposal on landfills is the least desirable option in the waste management hierarchy and that landfills are a major environmental risk, the C.I.O.S. group, as the leader in Croatia, is committed to and practices separate collection and material recovery of waste. Where waste generation is unavoidable or its efficient recycling is impossible, waste recovery is the solution, reducing the consumption of natural resources and fossil fuels.
C.I.O.S. group therefore strategically develops the energy recovery project for the portion of waste the further recycling of which is not feasible from technical, environmental or economic aspect. It is a technological process that represents the final stage in the recovery of already pre-treated waste in the C.I.O.S. group recycling centres, closing the circle of the circular economy concept. Thus, the energy value of residues is used and, based on the principles of integral waste management, green electrical and thermal energy is generated.
C.I.O.S. group and all its members hold all the required permits and certificates, in accordance with the EU and international waste management regulations. Environmental permits are held by the group members – CE-ZA-R MBO Varaždin, CE-ZA-R Zagreb and Metis Kukuljanovo and Pula.
C.I.O.S. group provides a major contribution to the environment protection and air quality, implementing low-carbon development measures and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.
C.I.O.S. group is one of the rare Croatian companies that have met all high standards of the World Bank and the IFC (International Finance Corporation) and in 2014 successfully repaid the long-term development program loan.
